Episode 08 The chosen Disciple

The chosen Disciple

Acts 1:23-26

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Two supremely important truths:

First, it tells us that the function of an apostle was to be a witness to the resurrection. The real mark of Christians is not that they know about Jesus but they know Jesus.

Second, it tells us that the qualification of an apostle was that the person must have been with Jesus. The real Christian is the one who lives day by day with Jesus.

Episode 03 Receive and witness

Receive and Witness

Acts 1:6-8

6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Jesus doesn’t tell them, but instead communicates a vision about reaching the world. The power of the Holy Spirit was going to make them Christ’s witness. Let us not certain things about this Christian witness.

First, a witness who says: “I know this is true.” A witness does not say ‘I think so’, but “I know”. Second, the real witness is not of words but of deeds. Just like a journalist who spent some time with David Livingstone who was a missionary in central Africa, he said: ‘If I had been with him any longer, I would have been compelled to be a Christian – and he never spoke to me about it at all.’ Third, in Greek, the word for witness means martyr. A witness had to be ready to become a martyr. To be a witness means to be loyal whatever the cost.
