6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Jesus doesn’t tell them, but instead communicates a vision about reaching the world. The power of the Holy Spirit was going to make them Christ’s witness. Let us not certain things about this Christian witness.
First, a witness who says: “I know this is true.” A witness does not say ‘I think so’, but “I know”. Second, the real witness is not of words but of deeds. Just like a journalist who spent some time with David Livingstone who was a missionary in central Africa, he said: ‘If I had been with him any longer, I would have been compelled to be a Christian – and he never spoke to me about it at all.’ Third, in Greek, the word for witness means martyr. A witness had to be ready to become a martyr. To be a witness means to be loyal whatever the cost.
