God does not show favoritism

Acts 10:34-38

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favouritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

We certainly do not deny that the good works of the saints please God. Since ourselves we cannot produce anything but ground for hatred, we to be loved out of grace. So it follows that the reason God loves us is to be found in himself alone; he is actuated by his own mercy, not our merits.

We must note that although after regeneration the faithful please God by good works and by a regard for works, that is not achieved by the merit of works. Our works are never so pure that they can please God without pardon. They are always mixed with some corruption, making them deserve to be rejected. So the value of works does not cause them to be esteemed; rather, faith obtains from Christ what our works lack.
