徒 Acts 8:14-17
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
In Jewish practice, the laying on of hands was very common. With it, there was held to be a transference of certain qualities from one person to another. It is not to be thought that this represents an entirely materialistic view of the transference of the Spirit. The dominating factor was the character of the one who performed the laying on of hands.
The laying on of hands was God’s instrument when he gave the visible graces of the Spirit to his people; when the church is deprived of such riches, it is only an empty form.
