Everything written here deserves careful meditation, but it does not need lengthy exposition. The church was evidently kept safe by God’s wonderful power. The church in Ephesus was as yet young and weak. The believers had experienced one sudden commotion and might reasonably have feared that similar storms would recur from time to time.
Although they were very sad to see Paul go, they did not try to stop him, lest they should harm other churches. So we see that they were not self-centered but cared for the kingdom of Christ. We must seek to help one another in this wretched dispersion; but if at any time we lack help, let us not doubt or waver, for we know that God holds the helm of the ship.
