15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
We must note that the wicked must not be commended to the government of the church. Those who are called to this office must behave reverently, in case they have the power to wound. If they do abuse this honor, the Spirit declares, whatever they order and decree ought to be null and void. Pastors’ authority is limited. If they go beyond their limits, we may lawfully refuse to obey them. If we did obey them, great wickedness would follow, as we now see.
